Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey on the shores of the Bosphorus, which divides it into European and Asian parts. The Old Town has preserved buildings from various historical eras.

In the Sultanahmet area there is the Hippodrome erected by the Romans, where chariot races have been held for many centuries, and the Egyptian obelisk. The Byzantine Cathedral of Hagia Sophia is famous for its huge 6th century dome and splendid Christian mosaics.
